Also known as "Largo for Strings", the Elegy for String Orchestra was composed in the spring of 2006 after McKinley learned of the passing of his longtime friend of 50 years, drummer Rodger Ryan. As many of his friends and family members were beginning to pass on, including the recent death of his beloved aunt who raised him after his mother had died when he was 12 years old, he felt the need to translate his sorrow and memory of their time here into music. Recorded by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra in the autumn of 2006 under the direction of Gerard Schwarz.
