For classical orchestra with woodwinds, horns, and trumpets in pairs. In two movements. The Introduction sets up the second movement by exploring the characteristic dotted rhythms and the intervals found in the Siciliana theme. The timpani have a prominent part in the Introduction, and woodwinds and brass have solo passages throughout. The Siciliana theme is static, and changes tone color rather than developing, while a narrative evolves in the accompaniment. While the introduction is energetic and almost boisterous at times, the Siciliana is envisioned as being heard through a glass dome, soft and remote throughout.
