Julius Hemphill is celebrated for the brilliance and expressive range of his compositions for Saxophone Quartet and Sextet. The Saxophone Quartet works included in Book I and II were premiered by Julius with the World Saxophone Quartet (WSQ). Covering a broad range of musical styles, they are compelling vehicles for improvisation and equally works that can be performed without improvisation as a concert suite. The orchestration is S/A/T/B, with some doubling of alto and soprano saxophone. These two collections are also available for String Quartet instrumentation and performance.
